BOY to release single ‘Mutual Friends’ on June 18th

BOY – a contagious confection that has spread across the internet like wildfire. The Hamburg-based duo sing smart, sharply-observed songs with hooks you can’t get out of your head and lyrics that come from the heart. Having conquered their native Germany and Switzerland, Valeska Steiner and Sonja Glass are shipping their sharp brand of pop back to Britain.

The BOY phenomenon began with ‘Little Numbers’ (June 18), the irresistible debut single which has sparked countless YouTube tributes and has recently been added to the B list at Radio 2. With its compelling and breezy optimism, it is one of those out-of-nowhere pop hits that sticks. The colourful video – shot on the streets of Barcelona in summer and starring passers-by and local kids – has already clocked up over 4 million YouTube hits since it was uploaded. And the song swiftly spawned countless tributes from fans posting their own versions.

The debut album, Mutual Friends (June 18), is an autobiographical affair. Its 12 songs tell the story of two girls from different lands who met, became friends, began making music together, and struck a chord with everyone who heard them. Beneath the sweet surface, BOY’s songs reveal inventive twists, adding subtle experimental touches to a conventional pop palette of piano, guitar, drums and bass. A rotating roster of friends jumped in to play on the album, among them Phoenix’s drummer Thomas Hedlund.

2012 sees the UK welcome BOY, as the girls mesmerised the crowd at The Jazz Café in London earlier this year.

They then made an impression at last weekend’s Great Escape in Brighton, as Jeff Smith of Radio 2 cited ‘Little Numbers’ as his track for future success, saying there is “a breadth and depth to their music”.

This triumph was followed by a packed-out headline gig to an adoring crowd of fans at The Borderline in London.

The next chance to catch BOY in the UK will be at in July at the London Olympics Swiss show, in between a string of 25 summer festival appearances across Europe.

With music that can both move you and bring a smile to your face, this is one BOY that won’t let you down.
