John Grant & Alice Russell join In The Round 2020 at Roundhouse this January

The Roundhouse have announced the addition of John Grant and Alice Russell to the lineup of In The Round 2020, taking place at the legendary Camden venue in January. Now coming up to its 5th birthday, the series, devoted to intimate performances set in the iconic main space, welcomes the two prolific performers to the bill alongside the likes of Jorge Drexler, Badly Drawn Boy, KOKOROKO (interviewed by Gigwise ahead of In The Round here), Beverley Knight, Anaïs Mitchell and Fatoumata Diawara. To find out more about what The Roundhouse in store next year, tuck into these previews by London In Stereo and Louder Than War.

Dubbed as one of the finest soul voices coming out of the UK, Alice Russell has earned the admiration of Giles Peterson, David Byrne, Dennis Coffey, Massive Attack’s Daddy G and Lauren Laverne to name but a few. Working with a whole host of producers, Russel has lent her awesomely emotional vocal delivery to the likes of Mr Scruff, Quantic, DJ Yoda, and perhaps most memorably Nostalgia, who’s collaboration on their cover of ‘Seven Nation Army’ thundering through clubs for years. Her new album, set for release in 2020, will be showcased for the first time at In The Round on Jan 27, and was conceived to be realised in this exact set-up.

Alongside news of Alice’s appearance also comes John Grant, the Michigan-born, Reykjavik-based singer-songwriter with almost a decades-worth of output under his belt. Grant’s sound has evolved dramatically over the span of his four albums – his debut, ‘The Queen of Denmark’, laced with soft-rock ballads and icy soundscapes, is a stretch away from his newer, effervescent synth pop. His exquisite songwriting and distinctive baritone, coupled with his unwavering lyrical honesty and trademark candour earned him a BRIT Award nomination for International Male Solo Artist in 2014. John Grant will perform a very rare, stripped back show in a duo format playing songs from across his celebrated career on Jan 29.

Since inception in 2016, In The Round has presented an eclectic mix of genre-spanning artists, bringing exclusive premieres, unique one-offs, solo sets and story-telling – quickly establishing itself as a key fixture of the musical calendar and a great way to kick off the year.

Previous performers have included John Cale, Julian Cope, Rokia Traoré, Gaz Coombes, Marianne Faithfull, Jaga Jazzist, Martha Wainwright, Ghetts, Lambchop, Tiger Lillies, Matthew E White, Mulatu Astatke, Beth Orton, Nadine Shah, GoGo Penguin, Oumou Sangaré, Patti Smith, Shirley Collins, Ana Moura, Fatima, Ronnie Spector, This is the Kit and more.

In addition to the stellar headliners, Roundhouse will continue its commitment to developing emerging talent by billing young artists who use Paul Hamlyn Roundhouse Studios as support acts.
